I've taken
to riding a longboard nearly exclusively these days, a personal
evolution
that on the surface might be interpreted as retro, given that I had
been
a ground-zero participant (if a very minor one) in the revolution in
thought
and design that resulted in the abandonment of the longboard for the
shorter,
lighter, highly maneuverable equipment that today dominates the lineup
worldwide. Looking back, the total rejection of the longboard was a
mistake,
if an understandable one. Truth is, 90 percent of all surfing is done
in
the less-than-ideal conditions of size, speed and power the best suit
most
shortboards surfing. The shortboard revolution, in its wild-eyed
enthusiasm,
failed to take this in to account. If it seems assbackwards
that
smaller boards work best in bigger surf, consider the basic
hydrodynamics
of a planing surfboard. In bigger, faster surf, less lift is required
to
