Recorded in 1960, the group reaches the peak of funky soul-jazz that all other challengers of the genre would have to live up to. Jordan, Duke "Flight To Jordan" CD CAP 92759 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 Duke Jordan established his credentials as pianist during 1947-48 when he was Charlie Parker's pianist. His composing skills did not emerge until the arrival of hard bop in the mid-fifties. Flight to Jordan from 1960 was his first full album as a leader and features the distinctive front line of Stanley Turrentine and Dizzy Reece.
Added to the album's six great Jordan compositions are another original and a trio version of "I Should Care." Donaldson, Lou "Gravy Train" CD CAP 92773 2007-08-18 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 This 1961 album features the signature sound that Lou Donaldson established in 1957 and hit pay dirt with a year later on Blues Walk. Fronting a quintet with Herman Foster's piano, bass , drums, and congas, this rich-toned, Bird-inspired alto saxophonist digs into soulful blues and lyrical standards. Alternate takes of the title tune and "Glory of Love" have been added to the original album. Morgan, Lee "Indeed" CD CAP 92781 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 Lee Morgan was truly a phenom when he burst onto the scene at 18, joined Dizzy Gillespie's band, and signed with Blue Note Records where he made 5 great albums in 10 months! Indeed was the first album; it features well-chosen compositions by Horace Silver, Donald Byrd, Benny Golson, and Owen Marshall. With Clarence Sharpe, Horace Silver, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones, Lee put together a band that is as volcanic as his playing. Chambers, Paul "Bass On Top" CD CAP 93182 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 Paul Chambers was the most in-demand bassist in jazz within a year after arriving in New York City. He was signed to Blue Note, in Miles Davis's quintet, and making countless sessions for a who's who of modern jazz.
Bass on Top was his third album and remains a crowning achievement. Chambers assembled a quartet with Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones, and Art Taylor, and built arrangements which feature his instrument prominently on melodies and solos. His bowed work is a thing of beauty. this Rudy Van Gelder remaster includes a seventh track from the session that was not on the original album.
Recorded on July 14, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey. Morgan, Lee "Candy" CD CAP 93176 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 Candy is one of the earliest documentations of Lee Morgan's trumpet brilliance. The then 19-year-old appears as the sole horn in a quartet with pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor. This would be Morgan's only quartet date, in fact. It consists almost entirely of standards, including the major pop hits "All the Way" and "Personality." In this regard, Candy makes for an interesting comparison with Standards, Morgan's long-lost septet session from 1967 (which didn't see release until 1998).
Among Candy's other highlights are Irving Berlin's "Who Do You Love, I Hope" and Jimmy Heath's uptempo "C.T.A." (Miles Davis recorded the latter on Volume 2 of his famous 1953 Blue Note series.) The CD reissue adds a blistering, previously unreleased take of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "All at Once You Love Her." Davis, Walter Jr. "Davis Cup" CD CAP 92766 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 One of the few pianists to succesfully master Bud Powell's achivements. Walter Davis, Jr. became an important pianist/composer for several editions of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and on pivotal recordings by Art Taylor, Donald Byrd, and Jackie McLean among others.
Davis Cup is his debut as a leader and, given the quality and variety of the writing and playing on this 1959 date, it's a shame that he remained so under recorded throughout his life. This is the pure Blue Note sound with Donald Byrd and Jackie McLean in peak form.

Dorham, Kenny "Afro-Cuban" CD CAP 92744 2007-08-18 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 this album is the first flowering of Kenny Dorham as a significant trumpet stylist and composer. Using the newly formed Jazz Messengers as the core of these ensembles, Dorham crafted Latin pieces like "Minor's Holiday" and "Lotus Flower," which would quickly become jazz standards. The large ensemble tracks with J.J. Johnson and driven by Patato Valdes's congas are especially effective. An additional tune and an alternate take from the sessions are included. Kennedy, Nigel "Blue Note Sessions" CD CAP 57050 2007-08-28 List: $17.98 (Save 22%) Your Price: $13.95 After decades of dazzling the world with record-breaking classical performances, the English violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy has begun charting a new artistic course with Blue Note Sessions, a breathtaking jazz recording. Although a readical departure from his lifelong study of the classics, there are still hallmark signatures of this uniquely gifted musician who has so changed the face of classical music. Quebec, Ike "Bossa Nova Soul Samba" CD CAP 92783 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 This program of sultry, minor-key music with a Brazilian tinge seems to have inspired Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here his big-toned, impassioned tenor is intact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that exploded that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo over the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo, and Garvin Masseaux. Three alternate takes have been added to the original album. Morgan, Lee "Delightfulee" CD CAP 92770 2007-08-18 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 This album started as a project for an 11-piece band arranged by Oliver Nelson and featuring Wayne Shorter, but four tunes were put on the shelf and Morgan went in six weeks later to cur four sides with a quintet that included Joe Henderson and McCoy Tyner. The original album contained the four quintet pieces, highlighted by the island groove of "Ca-Lee-So" and two pop ballads from the Nelson date. Added to the original album for this Cd are the four shelved Oliver Nelson-arranged tunes. Willette, Baby Face "Face To Face" CD CAP 93180 2007-08-18 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 Baby Face Willette is one of those mysterious musicians who came on the scene, made a big splash and then faded into obscurity. He was a monstrously talented organist with a relentless sense of swing. His first of two Blue Note albums put him in ideal company with soulful saxophonist Fred Jackson, guitarist Grant Green, and drummer Ben Dixon. The degree of empathy they attained on the various grooves set forth here sounds like they'd been together for years. Added to the original album are two alternate takes. Terrasson, Jacky "Mirror" CD CAP 91185 2007-08-28 List: $17.98 (Save 22%) Your Price: $13.95 For his first album since 2003's Smile, pianist Jacky Terrasson returns with heightened vitality on a superb solo outing, Mirror. The CD is a wide-ranging collection of re-envisioned standards, a jewel of a new standard, and six song-like originals, all delivered with a spontaneious joie de vivre. Morgan, Lee "The Latin Bit" CD CAP 93174 2007-08-28 List: $12.98 (Save 23%) Your Price: $9.95 This album is a delightful foray into a variety of Latin styles from South American standards to New York Latino hits to jazz tunes with an Afro-Cuban tinge. Wille Bobo and Patato Valdes drive the proceedings beautifully, and Green is cooking throughout. Three bonus tracks, two from a later session with Ike Quebec, have been added to the original album. Volume 2 features the compositions and arrangements of Beeny Golson and Owen Marshall.
Morgan's sparkling, pungent style was already in evidence at this young age and the stellar sextet handles this fasinating material with grace and ease. This is the first recording of the classic "Whisper Not."

The composer is also on tenor sax throughout. An alternate take of "Tip-toeing" allows the listener to compare Lee's approach to muted and open horn on the same tune.
