a truly superb collection of very intimate folk songs from a damn fine songwriter. hinson has stripped things right back to basic campfire folk sounds on this album. joining him on this new collection are members of the polyphonic spree, the paper chase, the drams and nick phelps. this is very much a rustic collection of folk sounds in the same style to the likes of bonnie prince billy, smog or phosphorescent. its pretty much all acoustic based with lots of mandolin, banjo, fiddle and sublime guitar picking. this really is a gem of a modern folk record and in my opinion hinsons finest moment so far. this version comes in a limited edition hardback book style sleeve. july 2008

-Our Album Of The Month
BECK - MODERN GUILT
brand new album from beck and his first for the xl label having just parted ways with geffen records. the album features the superb production skills of none other than danger mouse. the album also features backing vocals from chan marshall aka cat power on two tracks. this is real back to basics funky beck in our opinion, its not quite like his rough and ready early stuff but more like new pollution era beck. as always with beck the album is full of really clever twists and turns with some tracks starting of in the grungey rock genre before heading off into some kind of flaming lips like psyche pop teritory. one or two of the tracks kind of remind me of the funky psyche sounds of the beta band with their laid back beats laced with echoing guitars and weird space like sound effects. overall its very much a guitar led sound from beck this time with danger mouses production just adding the slightest hint of underground hip hop beats. fans of the more guitar heavy side of becks sound will be in total heaven with this rather superb return to form. july 2008

i have to say these guys just get better and better with every release. they are back with one of the finest singles to date with three minutes of pure synth led indie rock joy. shouty indie rock really never sounded better than the noises from this irish outfit. its full of big distorted guitars, eighties new wave synths and a blistering shouty vocal. the ep also features knuckle head and a cover of the mclusky track lightsabre cocksucking blues. this ep is limited to only 1500 copies worldwide and all copies are numbered. july 2008

very very limited irish only release from josh ritter on the independent label. this live album was originally released earlier this year in america only as part of the worldwide record store day celebrations. the album was recorded in the 9 30 club in washington for national public radio. this new irish only version comes with two extra exclusive bonus tracks and 3 live videos recorded in waterford during his last tour here. the full tracklisting for the album now features minds eye, to the dogs or whoever, rumours, the temptation of adam, right moves, real long distance, lawrence ks, next to the last romantic with the bonus live tracks wildfires and california. the live tracks features lillian egypt, overnite and real long distance.

ERIC COPELAND - HERMAPHRODITE
eric copeland is one of the main members of black dice and this is his first full length solo album. copeland delivers up some suitably strange noise and avant garde experimentalism on the paw tracks label. ranging from guitar based white noise to psychedelic electronica to hypnotic minimal krautrock. its a really varied collection which at times sounds like a more experimental take on the guitar sounds of early sonic youth and other times like the early seventies sounds of krautrock experimentalists harmonia or neu. there is plenty of that trademark black dice sound hovering around as machines and guitars constantly battle it out to be heard in the mix. fans of either black dice or indeed some of the animal collective stuff will love this. the album was released originally on cd on the pawtracks label in 2007 but this is the first time its been available on vinyl. july 2008

leila returns with her third album and this one features guest spots from terry hall and martina topley bird. its taken her nearly eight years to get around to a follow up to courtesy of choice and within a few tracks you can see why. this is one of the most intricate and pefectly formed electronic albums you are likely to hear all year. at times she sounds like broadcast or stereolab and then just when you think you know where its going next she goes off on a bbc radiophonic journey or a belting piece of aphex twin like distorted mayhem. its impossible to get bored with this record as there are just too many twists and turns. a real genre bending collection of sounds from one of the finest electronic producers around at the moment. july 2008

the eleventh official studio album from the legendary outfit wire. features two original members colin newman and graham lewis. its also their first release without guitarist bruce gilbert. its very much an album of rich layers and textures with big peter hook like bass sounds, lots of big washes of synth sounds and newmans classic laconic vocal delivery. if anything its an album that reminds me quite a lot of the more recent rumblings from new order where new wave and post punk meets a bit of electronic based rock. whilst wire were always respected for their avant rock sounds they were always capable of writing perfectly formed melodic indie rock and this album is full of that. july 2008

this is the second release so far from dublin based drone artist paul mcaree aka to black the pages. the ep features three lengthy explorations into the dark and haunting world of drone metal sounding at times like an even more minimal take on the likes of earth, boris or sunn o. the three tracks are full of slowly plucked and heavily distorted guitar chords, menacing buzzing sound effects and sci fi like keyboard tones. this collection seems to owe a bit to the later explorations of the likes of godflesh and the later work of jesu. i can kind of hear the slightly dubby dark tones of scorn on this one also. its absolutely wonderful stuff in a truly haunting evil way. july 2008

Road Records is based in Dublin, Ireland and is a totally independent music store and mail order service specialising in indie, alternative, underground rock, electronica, punk, reggae, country, folk, blues and whatever else takes our fancy. The store is run by two human beings, Julie and Dave, so you are guaranteed a personal touch when you shop with us. KEEP INDIE STORES ALIVE (not just us, all of them) - support your local store and not those damned "multinationals" and "dreaded supermarkets" who know nothing about real music. We are well aware that music can be purchased from many online retailers these days at cut down prices but lets face it, who wants a world without small dedicated shops all over the world, with staff that know a thing or two about music.
