3 New Pipes from Hiroyuki Tokutomi
As I mentioned in the opening of one of this week’s Tokutomi descriptions, much as a single brush stroke from a Shihan (a nationally acclaimed master of calligraphy) can draw gasps from an appreciative audience, master carver Hiroyuki Tokutomi can communicate more beauty and poignancy within a single curve than any pipe carver on the planet.. If you need any convincing on that previous, incredibly run-on, sentence, please take a look at the three Tokutomi masterpieces that we have for you tonight. Within the form of the two smooth vases that we just put on display, you can see the staggering amount of difference a subtle touch here and there can make to the anima of a shape. Under no circumstances should you miss seeing this update’s explosive reinterpretation of the blowfish.
3 New Pipes from Tom Eltang
Sykes and I had one of our weird “Damn, I am tired” conversations the other night and, like a staggering amount of our late night talks, the topic turned to semantics. We can’t help it, being a rabid semanticist is pretty much part and parcel with writing ungodly amounts, and it beats the two of us trying to figure out the attraction of NASCAR. When it comes to the word “master” as we apply it to carvers in our industry, Sykes and I have rather radically differing views. To me, “master” means that a man has mastered all aspects of pipe making, much as the word could be applied to a “master plumber” or “master electrician”. Sykes is more of a “capital M” kind of guy. When he thinks of the term, there is an implication that whoever’s surname immediately follows is being identified as the absolute, or near absolute pinnacle of the profession. While at the end, we both chose to “agree that we disagreed”, we both heartily agree that Tom Eltang is a master, with a capital “M”. Tonight, we have two new beautiful briars from Tom to present to you. Leading off is an immaculate cutty that features Master Eltang’s fabulous rustication/sandblast hybrid finish. This pipe demonstrates how much implied movement that a cutty can possess, when shaped by the right hands. The “Pièce de résistance” is a stunning volcano with a dazzling grain. We have only had two of Tom’s volcanoes placed on the site, previous to this one, and this is the first time that we have had one with bamboo.
12 New Dunhill Pipes
When you are very good at what you do, with a bit of luck and a fair wind to your back, you will attain a large and loyal customer base and, in the case of Dunhill, have a name recognition that extends well beyond the industry. To determine how good a pipe is, there really is only one way to find out, isn’t there? As they say, the “proof is in the pudding” and twelve more proofs just went up. Brilliantly grained Ruby Barks and darkly beautiful Shell Briars grace this update. Root Briars are on hand and Cumberlands abound. My “pick of this litter” is a gorgeous Amber Root apple that received the egregious slight of not being stamped with the title of “Flame”, which it richly deserved.
12 New Ser Jacopo Pipes
For over three and a half decades Maestro Giancarlo Guidi has come to represent the very best that the Pesaro school of pipe shaping has to offer. Not much of a surprise, given that the man is considered the founder of the same. This week we continue to offer a full 35% off the retail price of Ser Jacopo pipes, and add another dozen to choose from. This Ser Jacopo update includes a gorgeous La Pipaccia, and no less than four pipes from his world renown Picta series (two are the fairly hard to find Picta Picassos). Also on this Ser Jacopo update, we have one of Giancarlo’s stunning Kalabash pipes, a Rowlette and even a Lacus (only the fourth I have ever personally seen).
12 New IMP Meerschaum Pipes
IMP entered the business with the ambitious goal of creating a meerschaum pipe that possessed a drilling and engineering that would rival a superbly turned briar. As if that wasn’t a high enough bar for the company to set for itself, they were determined to place that drilling and engineering in shapes that were clean, sleek and innovative, eschewing the standard, cliché figural carvings that had dominated the market, prior to their entry. Another dozen of the world’s finest meerschaums are now up for your perusal and purchase. Take a look…better yet, give one a try. An IMP just might change the way you consider meerschaums altogether.
12 L'Anatra Pipes
For most of the country, the earliest theoretical date that late season duck hunting began was September 25th. Apparently you gents either didn’t get the memo, or jumped the gun, because two weeks ago you went “duck hunting” with a vengeance. We’re not going to turn you in, we LOVE selling L’Anatras, in fact we are just going to pretend that it never happened, and put another dozen, beautiful L’Anatras on the site. This week we having tantalizingly large Gigantes, all featuring sterling silver, incredible neo-classical apples, dublins and brandys. If you do nothing else in this section, you owe it to yourself to check out the superlative Fiammata, only the fourth one that we have ever had to sell.
12 New Mastro De Paja Pipes
Mastro de Paja has been synonymous with the Pesaro school of pipe shaping since its inception in 1972. Well, to be technical, in 1972 Mastro *was* the Pesaro school, having been co-founded by Giancarlo Guidi in the hopes of creating a heretofore unseen aesthetic in briar shaping. Giancarlo moved on, but that pioneering spirit, and divine neo-classical shaping lives on in the dozen pipes that we are about to present to you. For the first time within my recent recollection, this update from Mastro contains both one hundred percent hand made shapes, and all feature some sort of rustication or sandblasting. Take a peek at the new brandys, dublins and panels. Some feature silver, and all feature an undeniable charm.
12 New Sara Eltang Pipes
They are back! Yes, we have a full dozen of the Sara Eltang pipes, and this group is quite unlike anything you have encountered in the series. There are new and wonderful shape additions, as well as new takes on the established SE executions. Freehands, dublins, two entirely different styles of rhodesians. Ever seen horn as an adornment on a Sara Eltang? Well, you are about to.
12 New Neerup Pipes
Neerup pipes are made by Peder Jeppesen of Denmark, a talented carver with well over three decades in experience. That talent and experience is in the house in the form of twelve adroitly executed beauties. Hand shaped Idas, graceful billiards and brandies, deftly crafted panels, apples, dublins and eggs (both in smooth, as well as sandblast) await your perusal. A couple of bowls in a Neerup, and you are quite likely to be hooked.
36 New Savinelli Pipes ~ On Sale!
Savinelli of Italy has been crafting quality pipes since Rutherford B. Hayes was the US president and the perennial popularity is reflected in the (literally) millions of pipes that have been sold, and the satisfied gents who have owned them. This week, we take pleasure in introducing the Baronet Bruyere and the Venetia series to our lineup. The former are rusticated classics in the formidable “EX” size, and the latter are smooth, nicely grained classics in the generous “KS” size. Get this… not a single pipe in either series is over sixty bucks. Also along for the ride are the ever popular “La Pipa”, “Anniversary” and “Collection” pipes, all at thirty-five to forty percent off of retail!
12 New Brebbia Pipes
Brebbia pipes are crafted with care in Italy, and have long been a mainstay in our lineup. We are the number one dealer in the US for the Brebbia pipe, and we have plans of staying there. Towards that end, we take pleasure in updating our selection with another dashing dozen of Barrasso Italy's finest. The First Plum Calabash is here, closely accompanied Serie Pipes, Sabbiatas, and Capuccios. Whether you are looking for an affordable canadian, or an equally affordable saddle billiard, you have come to the right department. Heck, this week Brebbia even has an incredibly “Danish” freehand for you. Stop by and enjoy a bowl!
48 New Estate Pipes
Recently, I was at dinner with some new friends and they asked what I did for a living. Needless to say, they didn’t believe me (they never do). The topic came around to estate pipes, and one of the ladies present asked “why would anyone want a used pipe?” Ironically, she made the query while ladling food into her mouth with a “used” fork that was given considerably less cleaning attention than one of our estates. We all know the reasons. Someone else went to the trouble of picking “the best of the litter” from an existing line that a given tobacconist carried and then went through the trouble of breaking it in for you. Now you add it to your collection at a deep discount off the prevailing retail. Where’s the downside?
Another pachyderm plethora of pretty pre-owned pipes are presented for your preview, pleasure and purchase with this week’s update. Forty-eight in all, representing outstanding work from around the globe, all at outstanding savings when compared to new retail. Pipes from Italy always seem to be a major presence in our updates, and this week is no exception with a full “Baker’s Dozen” from “bella Italia” entering the hall. Don Carlos, Capitello and the venerable Paolo Becker lead the way. Brebbia takes to the floor, as does Ser Jacopo and a series of stunning Savinelli Autographs. America, while small numerically, still has much of interest to offer, with pipes from the likes of Paul Bonaquisti, John Eells and J.H. Boswell.
The miscellaneous category has pipes from canadian wunderkind Stephen Downie, as well as a handsome John Calich. Ireland packs a powerful punch with a Peterson Sterling spigot, an unsmoked System Deluxe from the year 2000, as well as two Sterling Spigots. For a real treat, check out the massive Peterson XL Gold Supreme. Germany presents only one pipe, but it is a fine one: a smooth bent apple, with bamboo from Thomas Richard Mehret.
At its zenith of its power, Britain held the largest Empire that civilization has ever known. While considerably decreased from its former size, the sun still “never sets on the British Empire”, what with the likes of Australia and the Falklands (which the Brits held on to for strategic sheep purposes) falling within the Commonwealth. England has also been a perennial powerhouse in our updates, and this week is no exception with nine representatives. Dunhill opens the show with a Patent pipe that boasts such a staggering grain that I thought it was an Ashton (speaking of Ashton, we have two of those as well). Dunhill continues on with Cumberlands, Shell Briars, and a Shilling that leaves me a bit dizzy.
The Danes hit this week’s update harder than their eighth century progenitors hit the British Isles! Stanwells and Nording Handmade freehands. Several W.O. Larsens are in the house, as are the Preben Holm made Ben Wade freehands from the seventies. We have a mint Benni Jorgensen horn… heck, we even have a classically shaped “Viking” for only thirty-five dollars. Please stop by and take a gander. There really is something for everyone.
