Theres really no way of getting around it: head lice are fairly gross. These little creatures take up residence in our hair and feed on blood that they extract from our scalp. To add insult to injury, they lay eggs and glue them to our hair follicles. One of the more memorable parental moments has to be combing your childs hair and discovering a patch of lice eggs.Lice is the plural form of the word louse. A louse is a type of insect that is both flightless and cannot jump (like a flea). Lice can however, move fairly quickly and one of the reasons you rarely actually see a louse is because like cockroaches, lice hate light. As soon as you turn on the light to comb your childs hair, the lice take off and crowd as close to the scalp as possible.Contrary to popular belief, there really isnt a season per se for lice. They live year round and can lay eggs at any time. Younger children tend to get them more during the school year when theyre in contact with a greater number of other children. They are generally passed when children share brushes or nap time blankets or carpet.Head Lice Arent a Sign of Poor HygieneThere is generally a certain amount of embarrassment that surrounds the discovery of lice on ones child. This is absolutely unnecessary. Head lice, unlike body lice, arent caused by a lack of cleanliness, and they dont carry disease or bacteria. Furthermore, standard washing absolutely wont kill head lice.

Lice have a short but fruitful lifespan, and even one louse can produce a great number of nits. If you have children and they attend school or a child care center, or if they have contact with any other children at all, there is a good chance that they could contract head lice. This is obviously no reason to keep your child sheltered. Its just one of those parental things you should be aware of.Head lice are a type of parasitical insect that lives on human blood. They take up residence on our scalps, eat our blood, and lay eggs on our hair follicles. They come strictly from other humans and cannot be passed to animals. They dont live for very long if theyre not on a host, so the best way to catch them is through contact with someone who is infected.Catching head lice is fairly common among children aged three to 12, and theres good reason for this. Children of this age group generally have a lot of physical contact with one another, and sharing combs, hats, blankets, and clothes is a frequent occurrence. This is why outbreaks of lice are taken so seriously at schools. Two cases of head lice can very quickly jump to 200 cases.Lice Treatment Is a Multi-Step ProcessOnce your child has lice, youll have to perform a very vigilant lice patrol to make sure that you get rid of them. This will most likely involve washing their hair with a special lice-killing shampoo, and then combing their hair with a specially designed lice comb. The initial washing kills the majority of the live lice, and the combing takes out the remaining eggs. You will then have to thoroughly wash any bedding that the infected person has come into contact with.

Head lice have been around for a long time on this Earth, and theres certainly a good reason for this. They have adapted to maximize their survival rate, and they are very good at what they do, i.e. breeding and dispersing. Despite the tenacity of head lice however, there are some good treatments that are fairly effective at eradicating them from their host.There is a whole sub-grouping of lice shampoos that are designed to destroy lice. Some are more effective than others, and unfortunately in high lice population areas, lice shampoos are becoming less effective. In other words, lice are becoming immune to the poisons we use to kill them.There are some fairly interesting and effective new herbal remedies for taking care of lice. These types of shampoos use extracts of plants like anise to kill the lice. Oftentimes these herbal alternative require more than one application, but the upside is they dont harm the environment and you dont have to subject your child to powerful artificial chemicals.Once You Kill the Lice, Then You Have to Kill the EggsShampoos are just half of the lice story. After you kill the live lice, then you have to get rid of their glued on eggs. The most effective way of doing this is to use a specially designed, narrow-toothed comb to rake the eggs out. This can be a time consuming and tedious process. Fortunately, there are some great new combs that are electric and can greatly reduce the time it takes to perform this final lice removal step.
