Collapsible Baskets, Decorative Three-D Trees, and Holiday
Ornaments.
Donald DeVeny, using the trade name Woodcraft Arts, is a self-taught
craftsman making traditional natural wood decorative items such as collapsible
baskets, three dimensional trees, solid wood puzzles, and scrollsaw cut holiday
ornaments. Marketing of these products is done primarily through craft shows, but is
also done by mail and phone order from regular customers and through this
Internet web site.
All items are made in a home workshop using more than sixty species of
domestic and exotic hardwoods. Parts are hand cut using a bandsaw or a
scrollsaw, hand sanded, and finished using oil or water-based
finishes. The designs have been inspired by a study of traditional craft items,
some of which have been owned in the family for generations, as well as
extensive reading and experimentations.
The folding wooden basket is a traditional craft art form that has
been around for more than a hundred years. Folding baskets are cut on a bandsaw using a single flat piece of wood.
They
work because of the natural strength and flexibility of solid wood. When it is
folded flat it can be used as a trivet or put away for convenient storage. When
the handle is lifted, it expands into a basket that can be used for any purpose
desired. Baskets are made in several sizes from seven inches wide to about twelve
inches wide, depending on the width of the piece of wood. Exotic woods are especially hard to find in wide boards. The basket is
treated with a Danish Oil finish to protect and emphasize the grain and color of
the wood. Baskets can be sanded with fine sandpaper to get rid of any marks or
scratches from use, and re-oiled
to look brand new.
Other popular items are the holiday ornaments and the three-d
decorative trees. Ornaments are all cut by scrollsaw
from solid wood, not birch plywood as is usually seen. I make over a hundred
ornament designs and use a number of beautiful domestic and exotic hardwoods.
Decorative trees are cut using the same principle as the folding baskets. Each section is cut using a slight taper, so that when they are expanded they lock together to form a three-dimensional
display.
