Use a shower gel, then a maching lotion, perfume and cologne What are they? Aromatic Oils have been used for healing and beauty since ancient times. They are natural substances extracted usually by the steam distillation method from flowers, herbs, resins and spices. A large volume of material is needed to produce these oils; sometimes hundreds of flowers only produces a few drops of oil. The by-products of essential oils are hydolats - floral waters. Essential oils are very complex, often containing many natural chemical in one oil. Steam distillation is employed in the manufacture essential oils, for instance, perfumes. In this method, steam is passed through the plant material containing the desired oils. It is also employed in the synthetic procedures of complex organic compounds. Eucalyptus oil and orange oil are obtained by this method on the industrial scale. How do they work? Essential oils are inhaled through the nose, affecting the olfactory system and thus the brain. They are also absorbed through the skin, sometimes reaching the blood stream. The work on the physical, psychic and emotional levels. How to use them? Essential oils are very concentrated and should always be used with care. Follow instructions given and do not be tempted to add more drops than recommended. Apart from a few exceptions, they should not be used neat on the skin but first dissolved in a carrier oil, milk, alcohol or water. They must never be taken internally unless under the guidance of a qualified therapist. They can be used in a variety of ways; the most popular methods being - Baths, Massage, Compress, Inhalations, Vaporisation and as Perfumes. Baths Most oils are ideal used in the bath, Fill bath with warm water - never very hot - add 3 - 6 drops of essential oil/s; stir the surface and soak for at least 5 minutes. Essential oils can be dissolved in coconut carrier oil before adding the blend to bath water for a more nourishing bath. ALWAYS dilute essential oils in carrier oils or milk for babies and young children, using 1 drop of essential oil only. For maximum benefit follow bathing with a massage when the body is more relaxed and the skin pores are open. Foot Baths Excellent for people who only have showers or find bathing difficult. Add 1 - 4 drops of essential oil/s in a bowl or warm or cool water. Soak for 5/10 minutes. Wonderful to rejuvenate tired and swollen feet. Massage Essential oils are always diluted in a carrier oil. e.g. sweet almond, coconut, grapeseed, etc. Either prepare enough for one massage or make a larger amount and store in amber glass bottles. It depends on the essential oil/s used but a general rule is to divide the amount of essential oil by 2 to obtain total number of drops needed, e.g. 10ml carrier oil / 5 drops essential oil/s. (Approx. 2-3%, 20 drops = 1ml). Less may be used on the face and only 1 -2 drops for babies and very young children. Create a relaxing atmosphere - warm room, dim lights, soft music, vaporising oils. Inhalations Add 8 - 12 drops in 2 pints of hot water. Pour water into bowl - leave a few seconds to cool slightly before adding essential oil/s. Cover head with towel and inhale. Excellent for respiratory tract infections - colds / coughs / sinus problems. Also ideal for facials - but do not use if there are thread veins. Take care not to let any oils enter the eye area. Asthma suffers should not use. Compresses A very effective way of using essential oils to relieve pain and swelling and to reduce inflammation. Hot compresses use for chronic pain - backache, arthritis, abscesses, earache and toothache. Cold compresses for acute pain - headaches, sprains, and other hot swollen conditions. To prepare hot compresses - fill bowl with very hot water, add few drops of essential oils, skim top surface with flannel and apply to affected area changing compress when it has cooled to blood heat. Cold compresses are prepared and used in the same way except use ice water or ice cubes in flannel. Alternate hot and cold compresses for sprains and muscle problems starting with hot and finishing with cold. Vaporisation As the essential oils are inhaled with this method, it is excellent for creating a mood atmosphere, use in a sick room, as a disinfectant and for removing unpleasant smells. Vaporise in a fragrance burner, light bulb ring, or an electrical appliance designed for this use. Perfumes Essential oils have been used in high quality perfumes for a very long time. Many of the oils can either be used on their own or blended together in jojoba or coconut carrier oils at 3 - 6% dilution. Room Sprays Fill plant sprayer with water and add some essential oils (3-6%). It is preferable to dilute them first in a little alcohol. Avoid spraying polished areas. Safety Information on Essential Oils Essential oils are very concentrated and should be used with care. Tighten lids and store in a cool place. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid eye areas Use amount recommended. Do not take internally. Should essential oil/s enter eye area smother with a carrier oil then wipe. Only 1 drop (diluted first) of essential oil for babies and very young children. Recommended oils - Lavender, Mandarine and Camomile Roman. The science of distillation is based on the fact that different substances vaporize at different temperature. Unlike other extraction techniques based on solubility of a compound in either water or oil, distillation will separate components regardless of their solubility. The distillate will contain compounds that vaporize at or below the temperature that water boils. The actual chemical components of distillates have not yet been fully identified, but distillate will contain essential oil compounds as well as organic acids. Compounds with a higher vaporization point will remain behind and will include many of the water soluble plant pigments and flavonoids --------------------------------------------------------Essential Oils are made from the volatile and highly fragrant part of the plant. They are used in aromatherapy and are often referred to as aromatic oils or ethereal oils. They are believed to each have their own health benefits such as strong healing powers, so they're often used as alternatives to medicinal cures. Essential oils quickly penetrate the body through the skin and the respiratory tract, and they enter and leave with body without leaving any toxins behind. Commonly, they are used in perfumes, cosmetics and flavoring. They are usually distilled or put through some kind of distillation process, but essential oils can also be cold-pressed (like oils of citrus fruits) or burned (for instance, made into incense). The most common essential oils are lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus; however, there are more than 400 in production. ----------------------------------------------Oil separationThe final step in the distillation of essential oils is the separation from the water flowing from the condenser using a special flask called a Florentine. This is a very important stage as small quantities of oils of very high value are being handled and maximum efficiency is the key to profitability. Figure 5: Florentines used for oil separation Most essential oils are lighter than water and float to the surface of the Florentine. Some oils, however, are denser than water and sink to the bottom. For this reason two types of Florentine are used as shown in Figure 5. It is common practice to link several Florentines together. Most of the oil will separate in the first flask but some will pass over with the water to the second, third etc. separates the oil from the water. This is usually done by letting the mixture settle in a large container made of glass. If the oil is heavier than water, the oil is collected from the bottom of the container, and if lighter from the top. _______________________________________A resource on Essential Oils Essential oils is a kind of are the subtle, aromatic and volatile liquids extracted from the flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, bark and roots of herbs, bushes, shrubs and trees through distillation. It is a form of Vibrational Healing. According to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, priests and physicians were using essential oils thousands of years ago to heal the sick. They are the oldest form of medicine and cosmetic known to man and were considered more valuable than gold. Clinical research shows, for instance, that Frankincense oil contains very high immune stimulating properties. Science is only now beginning to investigate the incredible healing substances found in essential oils. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What is aromatherapy? It is the controlled use of natural essential oils in the process of physical and emotional healing. You may have discovered that in some ways, you've been experiencing aromatherapy most of your life without even knowing it.We have all experienced memory recall triggered by a particular scent; perhaps the scent of a favorite flower, or the perfume your grandmother used to wear, or an aunt's linen closet. The event can produce positive or negative memories. Certain scents may trigger negative thoughts of a person or place in your past. Whatever the case, the importance of scent in our lives is quite profound and in some ways, unique to each of us. Aromatherapy is a way to enjoy a controlled use of natural oils to enrich and benefit your life. What are essential oils?Whole, pure essential oils come from nature; they are the "essence" of plants. They are droplets of water-like fluid contained in the leaves, stems, bark, flowers, roots and/or fruits of different plants, and give the plant its unique scent. Essential oils are volatile, whereas they easily transfer from a liquid to a gaseous state at room temperature or higher. The amount of essential oil found in most plants is 1 to 2%, but can contain amounts from 0.01 to 10%. They can change in composition and location with a particular plant. For example, orange trees produce neroli oil in their blossoms, orange oil in their citrus, and petitgrain oil in their leaves. Essential oils are also very concentrated and extremely potent, and sometimes 75 to 100 times more concentrated than say, the herb it is present in. This is all the more reason to use these oils with thorough knowledge of their potency. How are essential oils extracted? There are two common procedures for extracting true essential oils:Steam distillation Expression The process of steam distillation has 5 steps:Steam plant material Collect steam carrying aromatic molecules Cool in cold-water bath Produce floral water and essential oil Separate essential oil, then bottle This process is also the most popular for obtaining the essential oils from plants. The steam is forced into a vat containing the plant material, which ruptures the oil glands and releases the oil. The volatile oils are cooled, separated from the water content, and bottled. It may take hundreds or thousands of pounds of plant material to distill a single pound of the essential oil. Bulgarian Rose oil requires about 4,000 pounds of hand-picked flower petals to make 1 pound of oil, obviously making this one expensive oil!The second method, extraction, has 4 major steps:Have citrus peels Machine press Obtain essential oils and fruit waxes Separate oils, then bottle This method is primarily used in the perfume and food industries, and does not produce a 100% pure essential oil. Solvents are used in the process to pull out the soluable molecules; therefore making them incomplete oils. Resins, concretes, absolutes, and pomades result from this method. How are essential oils taken in?Essential oils are absorbed into the body two ways; through the skin and through nasal inhalation. Our sense of smell, controlled by the olfactory system, is some 10,000 times greater than any other sense. The olfactory system is directly linked to the limbic system, which is responsible for our emotional state, memory, and certain regulatory function.Essential oils also penetrate the skin, or the integumentary system. Because essential oils have a low molecular weight and are organic in nature, they are absorbed through the pores and hair follicles of the skin, and unlike synthetic chemicals, they do not accumulate in the body. Absorption can take place anywhere from 15 minutes to 12 hours, and take from 3 to 6 hours to be metabolized in a healthy body. Excessive fat or toughened skin may slow down the rate of absorption; whereas heat, water, exercise, or broken skin may speed it up.How are essential oils used?Aromatherapy is used to self-heal and soothe common, everyday health challenges. It is by no means a replacement for the opinion of a licensed physician, and should always be used with respect. As with all things derived from nature, some essential oils are considered hazardous, and under certain circumstances, should be avoided. Some are phototoxic, neurotoxic, or carcinogenic, and safety precautions should always be considered when working with and administering any essential oil. Here are common-sense safety points to note:Avoid essential oils deemed as hazardous Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children. Remember essentail oils are very potent. Do not take orally. Follow dilution guidelines carefully. Never use an oil without first diluting. Use 1% or less dilution during pregnancy. Be aware of others with sensitivities or allergies. Do not use on or near the eyes. Do a skin patch test if prone to sensitivities. Use extra care on broken or damaged skin. Avoid phototoxic essential oils if history of skin cancer. Keep them away from light and heat sources. Use only therapeutic genuine and authentic essential oils. (See also: Aromatherapy , Alternative Health, Body Mind and Soul) Olfactory aromatherapy: Holistic Health Dictionary I on AROMATHERAPY AROMATHERAPYUses essential oils extracted from nature’s herbs and flowers. The aroma is inhaled, or applied to the skin, and each of the oils (or combination thereof) addresses a specific disorder. It appears that the body is able to utilize the healing properties of the oils through the olfactory system of the body, and so initiate the healing process. Aromatherapy practitioners would also have an understanding of the psychological and emotional factors of illness.(See also: AROMATHERAPY , Alternative Health, Holistic Health, Body Mind and Soul) Olfactory aromatherapy: Natural Health Dictionary II on Aromatherapy Aromatherapy:Aromatherapy means “treatment using scents”. It is a holistic treatment of caring for the body with pleasant smelling botanical oils such as rose, lemon, lavender and peppermint. The essential oils are added to the bath or massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room. Aromatherapy is used for the relief of pain, care for the skin, alleviate tension and fatigue and invigorate the entire body. Essential oils can affect the mood, alleviate fatigue, reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. When inhaled, they work on the brain and nervous system through stimulation of the olfactory nerves. Living GreenIf you're serious about going green, give lemons a try. They disinfect. They polish. They bleach. And they don't come encased in a plastic bottle with a big price tag attached.Cut the junk by cutting your disposable drinking cup habit. Instead of a foam or paper cup, sip your daily dose out of your own travel mug if you're on the go, or ask the cafe for a mug if you have a few minutes to hang.* Cutting waste. If you purchase one cup of coffee every day in a disposable container, you create about 23 lbs. of waste each year.* Fewer noxious chemicals. Polystyrene (styrofoam) can potentially disrupt your hormones, and the chlorine used to bleach paper cups creates carcinogenic dioxins during production.* Saving cash. Many coffee houses offer a small discount to customers who bring their own reusable containers.Did you know that??Male Luna Moths can track a female that is 5 miles away? H umans can sense a skunk from only 0.000,000,000,000,071 parts of an ounce of offensive spray?
