Moorescandies.com is an informational site and does not endorse or support and particular brand or company. Candy has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. It is believed that the first candy treats were created in Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. These Egyptian candies were honey and fruit concoction that became a sticky and delicious candy. As time went on and the world’s civilizations grew, candy quickly traveled from Egypt to the continent of Europe. By the time period of the Middle Ages arrived in Europe the continent was experiencing a sugar shortage. As a result of this sweet shortage, candy rapidly became a delicacy in most European countries, and was primarily prepared for and enjoyed by the upper class citizens that could afford the expensive price of sugar. After the sugar shortage dissolved, candy began to gather a loving audience in all classes and cultures throughout Europe and other areas of the world. And with many people enjoying a new found love for candy, the sugary treats continued to evolve into other forms and delectable creations. Meanwhile, the popularity of another ancient treat was beginning to come to the forefront, chocolate. The cacao trees form which chocolate is created from originated in ancient Mexico and Central America. Back then cacao beans were so highly sought after that they were used for currency. Chocolate was finally discovered by European candy makers in the 1600s. Soon, chocolate makers began to perfect their tasty craft. Some of the pioneers in the business are still enjoying popularity today. These include: Baker Chocolates, Guittard, Hershey, Nestle, Cadbury, Whitman’s, and Ghirardelli. In 1763, the first chocolate factory opened its doors in the United States and Americans began a love affair with the smooth and creamy indulgence. Around this time candy was starting to become a favorite gift of many people throughout the population of the United States and Europe. Holidays were always the perfect time for gift-giving and Christmas, Easter, and Valentine’s Day quickly became the ideal occasions to give a sweet treat of chocolate or another form of candy to someone on your holiday list. As a result of the rise in popularity of candy gifts, the candy and chocolate companies did not hesitate in creating the perfect packages for these gifts. In 1854 Whitman’s Chocolates introduced the world to the first box of chocolates; the Cadbury Company followed in 1868 with a specialized box just for the Valentine’s Day holiday. These boxes made chocolate and candy giving an easy and nicely packaged gift.
