Travel Alerts in the NewsPassports Needed for
Mexico,
Canada, Bermuda, and
Caribbean
Starting January 23rd, 2007, travelers to and from
Mexico the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America and
Canada must have a valid passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the
United States. This requirement does not affect travel between the
U.S. and its territories.
U.S. citizens traveling between the
U.S. the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and
American Samoa will continue to be able to use established forms of ID.
The new requirements are part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) which is one element of a much larger law, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security have jurisdiction over implementation of the WHTI.
International Harmonization Of Security Measures Underway
Taken from TSA Website 11/08/2006; source: British Airways PLC
On November 6, the members of the European Union, as well as
Norway,
Switzerland, and
Iceland, will begin implementation of new security rules pertaining to liquids in carry-on bags in an effort to harmonize, to the maximum extent possible, with measures enacted by the
United States and
Canada in September 2006.
These changes are the first in Europe since the total ban enacted after the
United Kingdom foiled a liquid explosives plot on August 10, 2006.
Effective November 6, travelers going to and from the U.S., Canada, the 25 member countries of the European Union, as well as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, can now use the same one quart, clear plastic, zip-top bag to transport their travel-sized liquid, gel and aerosol items in carry-on bags through various security checkpoints here and abroad. To put this in perspective, approximately half of the world's travelers will be governed by similar security measures. This is an historic and unprecedented accomplishment.
This collaboration is a monumental development in international airline security. The clarity and consistency of security measures will help remove confusion for passengers traveling internationally while concurrently making the detection of threat items easier at the checkpoint for all security officers.
Re-Introduction of Liquids for UK Departing Flights
NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- British Airways welcomes today's announcement from the UK's Department for Transport adopting new security rules that permit the carrying of liquids, gels and pastes in limited quantities through airport security in cabin baggage for flights departing the UK.
The new European Union rules have been implemented for all air travelers traveling from any EU airport, including UK airports, as well as those traveling from Albania, Kosovo, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, regardless of their destination, from Monday, November 6, 2006.
Liquids must be held in individual containers not exceeding 100ml (approximately 3.5 fl. oz). Liquids, gels and pastes that may be carried include: shampoo, creams, hair gel, hair spray, suntan lotions, toothpaste, liquid or aerosol deodorants, perfumes, cosmetics such as mascara and lip gloss, water and other drinks, soups and syrups and other items of a similar consistency.
All liquid containers must be carried in a clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8 inches x 8 inches) or one-quart capacity. Each passenger will be permitted to carry one of these re-sealable bags. Items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed. At the airport security search, the plastic bag must be removed from the cabin bag and x-ray screened separately. Cigarette lighters must not be carried through security.
Robin Hayes, Executive Vice President the Americas, said, "We welcome the introduction of the new regulations allowing the carriage of liquids as it brings the UK in line with the rest of the EU. We continue to urge passengers to pay close attention to the new regulations so that they can be fully prepared before they reach the airport."
As a reminder, passengers traveling on a flight FROM the UK may take one industry-sized cabin bag no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 16cm (22in x 17.5in x 9.85in).
