The exhibit includes work from Don Reitz, John Balistreri & Friends! What is an Anagama? An Anagama is a traditional Japanese wood fired kiln that reaches temperatures up to 2,500 °F (1400 °C). An anagama (a Japanese term meaning "cave kiln") consists of a firing chamber with a firebox at one end and a flue at the other. (Note: Although the term "firebox is used to describe the space for the fire, there is no physical structure separating the stoking space from the pottery space). The term Anagama describes single-chamber kilns built in a sloping tunnel shape. In fact, ancient kilns were sometimes built by digging tunnels into banks of clay. The St. Petersburg Clay Company has one of the largest Anagama kilns in the United States. Current AIRs Jessica Wilson Nicki Wood Jamie Bardsley Jamieson Cash Vanessa Diana Nicole Gugliotti Josh Smith Tim Salen Members AIR Progam Our gallery is named after Tim Salen, a talented potter and photographer and one of our inaugural members. We had run out of studio space but Tim wanted to be a part of St. Pete Clay so badly, he asked if he could work in a storage closet. Tim built our first raku kiln and was always the first to volunteer when anything needed to be done. When we learned he had cancer, we decided to name our gallery after him in appreciation for all he had done on our behalf. We also told him that he would have the first official show in the gallery bearing his name. Despite a brutal regimen of chemotherapy, Tim would come in most every day, never complaining about his problems. Our first show was his show and the proceeds from the sale went to a perpetual endowment in his name at the Arts Center in St. Petersburg. Every year, a potter or a photographer receives the "Tim Salen Award" at the Spring Juried Show. Tim's boots sit in the corner of the gallery but his spirit can be found everywhere. He was a great friend and we will never forget him. Members Gallery Members Photo GalleryComing Soon! Artists In Residence Gallery Artists In Residence Photo Gallery Coming Soon! Brian and Gail McCarthy founded Highwater Clays over twenty years ago. Brian began mixing clay in a small dough mixer in an effort to provide quality clay bodies to the potters in the Asheville area. Since then, Highwater Clays has grown to become one of thelargest clay body manufacturers and ceramic supply companies in America. In addition to these activities, Highwater's "Odyssey-Center for the Ceramics Arts" has come to be regarded as one of the finest teaching studios in the Southeast. The Odyssey Gallery gives viewers the opportunity to look at and purchase some of the best contemporary clay work from around the country. Highwater Clays of Florida opened its doors in the sunny city of St. Petersburg in June of 2002. The well-stocked retail store and warehouse are located at the St. Petersburg Clay Company. The friendly staff at Highwater Clays Florida hope to better serve customers in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, providing them with high-quality clays, supplies, and, as always, excellent customer service. The St. Petersburg Clay Company focused on four areas - studio space rental, retailing of clay supplies, gallery sales and education. Originally located in a former machine shop comprising 6000 square feet, the company doubled in size in 1997. Still unable to meet the needs of an ever-growing public interest in clay, the search began for a new facility. At about this same time, The St. Petersburg Clay Company (SPCC) was contacted by Highwater Clays, located in Asheville, N.C. and asked to become their Florida distributor of clay, supplies and materials. Two years later, an agreement was reached between the two companies that resulted in a new partnership. Highwater Clays leased SPCC's retail business, allowing SPCC to focus more time on its partners' original vision of creating the premiere ceramic facility in the United States. Our pursuit of excellence begins with our facililites. A 16th Century Japanese-style anagama kiln, a wood-firing train kiln, soda and salt atmostpheric gas kilns, 2 Minnesota flat top gas kilns, a pit kiln, raku kilns and over a dozen electric kilns provide the member artists of SPCC a complete array of firing possibilities. Along with our kilns, our members have acess to all studio equipment including slab-rollers, extruders, work and wedging tables, clay mixers and an expansive glaze mixing area all contained in an historic 1920s train depot. For more information on our facilities or memberships, please visit us or contact us at (727) 896-CLAY Tuesday through Saturday, 10am - 5pm. In 1914, Seaboard applied to the City of St. Petersburg to bring their railway into town but was met with heavy opposition by the existing railroad. The City put the measure to a referendum, which the voters of St. Petersburg unanimously passed. The Seaboard Coastline Freight Depot opened on Sept. 13, 1926 and served as a freight depot until 1967. Upon closing, the Freight Depot was used for a variety of businesses, such as offices, a flea market, feed store, an import and antique business and a warehouse. In 1993, the City of St. Petersburg placed the Depot on the Lgocal Historic Register. The Depot was built in the Masonry Vernacular style of architecture and is one of the last remaining examples of railroad architecture in Pinellas County. In 2000, the Seaboard Partners LC was formed and purchased the Depot with the purpose of transforming it into the new home of St. Petersburg Clay Company, Inc. Renovations took two years and cost a little over $1,000,000. © St. Petersburg Clay Company 2008 Site Design by Bravo DMS |
