Our goal is to resurrect the ancient art of devil stix and take it to a new level as performance art. We will accomplish this through several courses of action:Training - to enhance the skills and awareness of stix users Promotion - to gain greater public awareness and interest Manufacture - to make and sell superior quality stix, allowing us to fund our operations Fun - what the stix are all about!A FEW WORDS ON DEVIL STIX The art of devil stix has been arround for thousands of years. The stix were originally made of carved wood which could then be dyed and decorated for use during tribal meetings. Rumors of their country of origin are numerous; some point to China, Africa, and even Native America. The Chinese called them flower stix, but most commonly they are called devil stix (diablos), and wizard stix due to an historical problem where people often overreact and brand things that they do not understand (classic example - Salem Witch Trials). It is possible for a skilled user of the stix to appear to be possesed or capable of magical powers, because of the peculiarity of the unusual performance. It is however, only a practical application of the laws of physics at work, and with time and practice anyone can learn the secrets of patience and develop sensational skills in this spactacular field. The name Dragonstix was chosen to assert that we do not associate ourselves with the devil, and we use the alternate spelling of "stix" just because we like it! Although it is true that the original stix were made of hand carved wood, the trend today is to try and cheat gravity's persistant force as much as possible. This is frequently done by wrapping the carefully carved stix with various types of material, such as cloth, tape, rubber, etc., in order to increase friction between the main baton (referred to as the "stick") and the passing wands ("passers"). The material is also benificial for decoration as well as developing a greater control through the use of weight distribution. At Dragonstix, we are constantly striving to find the perfect balance between beauty and functionality in the creation of our stix. The last important benifit of wrapping the precious lumber is to protect the stix from the brutal ground impact of the novice user, the explosive stick-on-stick forces unleashed by the seasoned veteran, and finally to protect the innocent bystanders and onlookers (and their belongings) from the full, unrestrained forces of devil stix on the loose. Nowadays, a potential devil stick consumer has the choice of two different types of stix, and in each of these catagories there are two ways of constructing the equipment. The best type of stick in each catagory is hand-crafted, where a true artisan has worked for hours in creating a truly significant member of the devil stick family. The other type is machine made, or quick wrap stix which can be found in local toy stores. These are nothing more than the commercialization of a sacred ritual which produces inferior quality products for a brain-washed multitude of ignorant consumers. Donot be fooled by these shabby replicas, they are simply toys; they have no spirit and will never work as well as stix which are built by actual users who care about the products they design and the people who use them.What do you want... toys made by machines, or art made by craftsmen? The two different types of stix are: 1the original wood carved stick, and 2a straight stick (no taper in the middle) which is weighted at both ends with balls, fringe, etc. and have been appropriately named orbitals. The two stix behave very differently and anyone who has become familiar with one style may reqiire some time to learn the subtleties of the other. A carved stick tends to be heavier and this extra weight allows for faster performance whereas a straight stick is much better suited for beginners due to its slower response and less damaging weight. The production of orbitals is an easier task due to to the absence of carving during the production, and because of this, the cost of orbitals tends to be much cheaper than the more extravagant tapered stix. The "devil stix" available in most toy store chains are of the orbital variety and are sold for around $15 to$20. The carved (tapered) stick variety is not often available in stores, but they can be purchaced, if you know where to look. The most common places are concerts, renissaince fairs, or from the actual crafters themselves (i.e. Dragonstix- hint,hint) who might be found at record shops, malls, parks, or the aforementioned concerts.
