Spink Shreves Galleries - The Frederick R. Mayer Collection of Costa Rica - October 22, 2008
Spink Shreves Galleries is honored to sell, at unreserved public auction,
one of the greatest single country collections ever formed. There is no
question that the collection of postage stamps and postal history of Costa
Rica - assembled over a lifetime by the renowned philatelist Frederick R.
Mayer - is the most comprehensive and valuable ever formed. Its scope and
depth are simply remarkable – replete with virtually every recorded major
rarity in all categories - often with multiple examples of each.
All areas of Costa Rican philately are extensively covered in Mayer
Collection, including stampless covers, stamp issues both on and off cover
(including the finest and most comprehensive selection of 1863 First Issue
covers ever offered at auction), essays and proofs, air mail related
material, postal stationery and revenues - and much more. The appearance of
this spectacular collection is truly a once-in-a-life opportunity for
collectors of Latin American stamps, or for collectors of important
rarities of the world.

Cherrystone Auctions - Russia October 2008 - Shlomo Shtern Collection - October 29-30, 2008
The great collections of Russian Philately formed by Faberge, Goss,
Liphschutz, Mikulski and Denisenko (the latter two sold through
Cherrystone) focused entirely on Imperial issues. The Shtern collection is
the first important sale devoted exclusively to stamps of RSFSR and the
Soviet Union. This award winning collection (over 50 medals, including
large golds) contains a strong selection of proofs, essays, perforation
varieties, imperforate errors and fantails, as well as stamps that were
prepared but not issued for political reasons. Hardcover catalogues are
available through our website www.cherrystoneauctions.com Dynamic Internet Bidding at StampAuctionNetwork.
Eastern Auctions Ltd. - Public Auction - November 1st, 2008
Our sale begins with some British Commonwealth and Worldwide single-lots and
collections. Worth mentioning is the Great Britain 1929 One pound UPU
preliminary pencil drawn sketch and progressive die proof with correspondence;
strong collections of New Guinea and Iceland.
British North America section is powerful throughout, with choice
early Pence issues from British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and
Newfoundland. Also impressive is the vast selection of seldom-seen plate
proofs and die proofs. Most of the proofs originated from a collection which
was assembled during the 1960s and 1970s, and left untouched since. A mint
inverted Halifax airmail and a Columbia Flight cover concludes the highlights
from the Newfoundland section.
Canada is well covered from early Pence to Back-of-Book and Semi-Official
Airmails. The many elusive proofs from the same collection mentioned above,
will certainly attract bidder attention. An important Large Queen collection
is presented, which once belonged to Horace Harrison, in addition to many
rarely seen plate and watermark varieties from the same issue. Choice items
from Small Queen to King George V "Admiral" issues are to be found, with an
unusually strong representation of imperforate pairs, followed by rare and
sought-after modern errors such as the 1959 "Inverted Seaway", the 1989
Runnymede Library and 1994 Provincial School with inverted inscriptions, among
others. Collectors who have come to appreciate our offerings of precancels,
an increasingly popular area, will not be disappointed. Over 100 lots of
precancels, many from the Harry Lussey collection will be featured.
