2007 The Grail Hawkes Bay Syrah/ Viognier
Gisborne & Hawkes Bay - Other, Gisborne & Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
This is a wine we believe could happily sit in the $35-$40 NZ Syrah price bracket. 'Get people to try the wine' is what we have told 'The Grail 'so they've agreed to this marketing philosphy. This is seroiusly good syrah. The Grail have developed what they believe is a world first in the production of red wine by being able to remove the grape seeds before fermentation. Quality red winemaking is always a balance between extracting the maximum flavour, colour and smooth tannin from the skin of the grape, while minimising the extraction of hard, green, aggressive components from the seeds. Because the whole grape is fermented with the seeds, many high extract red wines take 5-10 years of aging before they become drinkable.
The Grail produce concentrated, quality red wines by removing the seeds from the grapes, before fermentation. This allows complete extraction of flavors, colour, and fine skin tannins, while eliminating the harsh, astringent, unripe components normally contributed by the seeds.
The resulting wines are advanced for their age, rich and densely packed with mouth-coating flavour.
Produced from Dartmoor Gravels and Gimblett Gravels fruit
with 94% Syrah, 4% Malbec and 2% Viognier. The wine spent 6 months in 100% new oak. The nose is one of red currants, black cherry, plum, violet, fine pepper and smoked spice with a rich, fruity palate of red berries and black dorris plums. Silky fine tannins, refined pepper, intense mouth-coating flavour and a wine that is smooth and elegant complete this excellent package. Try and enjoy.

2007 The Grail Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
Gisborne & Hawkes Bay - Other, Gisborne & Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
A stunning debut wine from this new winery and priced so people will try the wine ( they initally were looking to release this at $36 until we convinced them to let the market try the wines at reasonable money ). With all the key ingredients ticked this is one to watch. Grant Roberts is behind this new project. Following 3 and a half years of study, vintages worked at Park Estate and Vidals, and a year at C J Pask, Grant became the first NZ recipient of the Bragato Exchange Scholarship to Italy. With introductions to the leading winemakers of Tuscany, Veneto, Friuli, Lombardy, and Piedmont he was allowed unhindered access to their varieties, viticultural systems, winemaking methods, and most importantly their philosophies. “Having the chance to experience world famous, unobtainable wines with the winemakers who created them, has added decades of knowledge and experience to the techniques I learnt at E.I.T. I returned from Italy knowing exactly what I should do in New Zealand.”
The fruit is from the Dartmoor Valley is Mendoza clone and aged in 100% new oak. It has a heady crème brulee nose, spiced with ruby grapefruit and apricot. The palate is dense , rich, smooth, very full, complex and complete. This is one serious chardonnay for the money.
$19.99
2007 The Grail Hawkes Bay Merlot/ Cabernet/ Malbec
Gisborne & Hawkes Bay - Other, Gisborne & Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
With 'The Grail' philosophy being the release of gorgeous drinking wine that needs no further aging to be at its best, they are able to achieve this with the use of technology exclusive to The Grail where they remove the harsh, green, tannic seeds from the fruit prior to fermentation.
This allows us to fully extract the flavours, colours and soft tannins from the skins without any negative components from the seeds.
The wine is from the Dartmoor Gravels and Gimblett Gravels. It is 50% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec and 13% Cabernet Franc. It spent 6 months in 100% new oak. The nose is of dark fleshy rose petal, black mulberry, violet, plum, leather, vanilla and smoked coffee . A palatethat is rich and complex with spiced plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, vanilla, leather and fine dusted liquorice tannins which are very well integrated and developing beautifully. Sensational Bordeaux blend at realistic proicing.
$21.99
2007 The Grail Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc
Gisborne & Hawkes Bay - Other, Gisborne & Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
Very, very good lees aged, old vine sauvignon blanc. When we tried this with our "only good sauvignon can only come from Marlborough blinkers on" we were stunned. From the Dartmoor Valley this has a very intense, floral, tropical, lemongrass nose with a palate of zesty, lemon, pineapple, pawpaw, grapefruit, passion fruit and generous persistent mouth-coating flavour- rich and intense.
$19.99
2006 Waterwheel Memsie Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec
Waterwheel, Victoria, Australia
Its year to year consistency is amazing and even the Aussie's cant get enough of this superb value wine and their Winewise Magazine rated the Memsie third place in a tasting where the 1st, 2nd and 4th place wines were all over $40.00. "The purple-colored 2006 Memsie Red is composed of 87% Shiraz, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Malbec, the wine was aged for 6 to 9 months in used American hogsheads. The aromatics are unusually expressive for a wine in this price category. Aromas of cinnamon, allspice, plum, blueberry and black currant lead to a medium to full-bodied wine with a plush texture, ripe sweet fruit, and a sense of elegance. This tasty wine will provide pleasure over the next 4-6 years. Congratulations to Water Wheel for over-delivering on a superb quartet of wine values" 90/100 R.Parker. Wine Orbit Magazine gives the 2006 a 92/100 and write "The new vintage of Memsie is another impressive, big, rich wine that is easy to drink. It's predominately Shiraz with help from Cabernet and Malbec adding structure and density. The full bodied palate has scrumptious fruit up front and a silky smooth texture with fine, ripe tannins. At its best now to 2010." Outstanding value.
$17.99
2006 Wrongo Dongo
Jumilla - Other, Jumilla, Spain
"More righto than wrongo, it may have a silly name but this 100% mourvedre made from 45 yr old vines is a serious bargain with its rich and velvety but fresh blackberry fruit, earthy and leathery notes and lick of spice and liquorice. A brilliant barbeque wine." NZ Herald. From a hillside vineyard in Jumila at 700m above sea level where the temperature variation goes from 15c during the winter days and -2 at night to summer days of 35c and 10-15c at night ( the perfect variations for grape cultivation ). The vineyards has a foot deep of chalky stones over a substrata of sandy soil. "A wine with an interesting name and an unusal label, but the flavours are straight- forwardly delicious. Made from old Monastrell vines, the wine displays vibrant primary fruit flavours of blue/ black berries and a floral freshness. Its fruity on the palate with a generous texture, fine acidity and soft tannins. Just delicious to go with tapas and pizzas. At its best now -2009. " 89/100 SMART BUY. Wine Orbit
$16.99
2006 Peregrine Wentworth Central Otago Pinot Noir
Peregrine, Central Otago, New Zealand
Peregrine Limited Release Single Vineyard Pinot Noir which is only produced when exceptional fruit is available from this benchmark vineyard in the Gibbston area. The 2006 growing season provided the perfect growing conditions for premium Pinot Noir resulting in their earliest harvest to date.
The fruit was hand harvested, destemmed to open top fermenters and given a seven day cold maceration prior to warm fermentation. The resulting wine was pressed to French oak barrels (25% new) where it spent 9 months. The wine was racked from barrel and lightly filtered before being bottled. "The 2006 Wentworth Pinot Noir has great depth of colour. The nose has mocha, red fruits, tobacco and spice while the palate overflows with dark fruits such as plums and cherries, spice, chocolate and fine tannin to match the fruit and ensure the wine will last for years to come."
$54.99
2007 Felton Rd Central Otago Pinot Noir
Felton Road, Central Otago, New Zealand
A very floral, perfumed, classic Pinot Noir nose: fruit, violets, spice and bramble, with nothing in excess. Creamy and weighty across the mid-palate, very flowing, almost juicy sweetness with just enough dusty tannins kicking in to complement a dark finish with hints of espresso and chocolate. Complete, complex and perhaps close to the ultimate expression for a Felton Road Pinot Noir.
