Or maybe some of the secret stash of the 2002 Vouvray Tradition that we managed to get our hands on. That for me is a legendary wine. Anybody who has drunk it knows too. 2002 Pinon Vouvray Tradition is a great bottle of wine. Wonderful vivid flavors of almonds, apples and pears, and a lovely silken-like texture. Dazzling purity too. With the legs to age for twenty more years, and the right price.  The bottle in questionA New Value Bourgueil!When David was at the Salon in the Loire last winter he tasted with a producer named Stephane Guion who has been organic since 1965. It's a 6.8 hectare estate in Bourgueil that is harvested by hand, with no herbicides or pesticides used. The Cuvee Prestige (1,200 cases made) comes from vines from 40 to 80 years old, giving yields of 35 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. The fruit and mineral aromas and flavors, typical of the clay/limestone terroir, are explained by the wild yeasts as well as by the deep root systems in the limestone hillside.  The Hermannshohle vineyardSacred ground in the hands of Jakob Schneider: A new player in HermannshohleMany German wine lovers are familiar with the scared terroir that is Hermannshohle, and thus of course with its top interpreter, Helmut Donnhoff. It is like the relationship between Musigny and Comte de Vogue. When you think of Musigny you think of Comte de Vogue and when you think of Hermannshohle you think of Helmut Donnhoff. The vineyard is a steep hillside, and the soil is mostly comprised of slate, porphyry, melaphyre, and sometimes all of these elements jumbled together in one mass of some nasty Hermannshohle rock. Terry Thiese thinks that "NO SINGLE WINE IN THE WORLD IS AS COMPLEX AS DONNHOFFS BEST FROM HERMANNSHOHLE." The caps are Terry's. It's a grand declaration and one I usually agree with when I'm drinking the wine, but when I'm not tasting it I could argue for Montrachet from Ramonet, Chevalier-Ramonet from Niellon, or Scharzhofberger from Egon Muller. Silvaner, Riesling, Spatburgunder, Muller-Thurgau and Weissburgunder. We have them all because I believe Rudolf Furst is one of the greatest winemakers in Germany. This wine is incredible Pinot Blanc. Chalone's got nothing on Furst. This had a clean nose of apple blossom and some lees. Italy WhiteBruna 2006 Riviera Ligure di Ponente Pigato le RusseghineThis wine is made from the spicy Pigato grape, a relative of Vermentino which is grown on steeply terraced hillsides facing the Mediterranean in western Liguria. Ricardo Bruna, the winemaker, has a tiny estate with 13 acres under vine and, according to everything that I've read about this producer, is "non-interventionist" and a very "natural" sort of winemaker - i.e. wild yeasts and no fancy gadgetry in the winery. This wine exhibits rich Cointreau-like citrus aromas that mingle with some blanched almond, white peach, and a flinty spiciness that just sends my soul into a tizzy. On the palate the purity and clarity in this wine is ridiculous. This has an intense sumptuously fruited texture almost Alsatian-like in concentration and purity, citrus and stone fruits, a piney, thyme-like herbaceousness for added complexity and a clean, long and persistent finish that builds and builds. Leitz, Joseph 2007 Rheingau Riesling "3" QBA TockenEnter the first vintage of Josef Leitz "Eins-Zwei-Dry" - what a lovely wine! Crackling with minerality, some lime zest and pure sea and seashell aromas on the nose, this is a great intro into dry German Riesling and all the pleasures it can entail. This seems like it won't make old bones and is an ideal candidate for a summer sipper. This is crisp, cracklin' and almost has a Muscadet-like minerality that borders on saline. Also the price is right. A steal for wine of this quality and it actually is mostly sourced from an Erstes Gewachs (First Growth) site called Geisenheimer Rothenberg. LFwhite | 1 in stock | $14.99
 The Gonon CellarGreat St Josephs from Jean and Pierre GononJean and Pierre Gonon work 5.5 acres of Syrah, at Tournon, Mauves and old vines from Trollat at St Jean de Muzols. The white, 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, is on the Coteaux des Oliviers and was planted in 1958 and 1974. They pick as late as possible and ferment with wild yeasts. Pigeage is mostly by foot. RhoneGonon 2006 Saint-Joseph Rouge Upon opening the nose was just screaming with with olives, blood, game leather, spice, loam and mineral. A nose that utterly reeks of stanky Syrah. Every old school Syrah lovers dream. The palate has wonderfully rich fruit, that is exceptionally pure and coupled with lovely acidity. There is lovely earthy sweetness to the fruit and an animal character that kicks in on the back end. The finish lingers and shows great complexity already at this young age but this will improve over the next ten years. Tremendous wine. There is a granular-like texture and suave, sleek tannins. This is Syrah that is a killer value and actually scrap that . . .just a killer wine. This is the third vintage we have been working with and each one gets better. Introduction by Philippe Pacalet to "Jules Chauvet - Etudes Scientifiques"The following essay was written by Burgundy winemaker Philippe Pacalet, as an introduction to a collection of Jules Chauvet's studies on yeasts, techniques of vinification, carbonic maceration and malolactic fermentation. Considered to be the "father" of French natural winemaking, Chauvet was a Beaujolais negociant, taster and chemist whose studies and opinions, from the 1940's till his death in 1989, encouraged and made possible more natural methods, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. We see his influence, for example, in the work of Marcel Lapierre and others in the Beaujolais beginning in the early 1980's, and in the thriving natural wine movement today in France and Italy.
