A tall majestic plant with impressive pleated leaves of two or three feet in length, the Nun’s Orchid’s spikes wield as many as 20 flowers each and reach heights of 4 feet (121 cm) or more.Nun’s Orchids originate from China and were cultivated as far back as the1800’s by British ex-patriots in Hong Kong. These flowers also made their way from China to the United States in the 1800s.Most varieties of Nun’s Orchids are terrestrial, growing on the ground, butsome species are epiphytes (tree dwellers).Also Known As…The Nun’s Orchid has been bestowed with a range of names, including Swamp Lily, Nun’s Cap and Swamp Orchid. Apparently Nuns Orchids were also sometimes called “Tropical Foxgloves” in the United States.Cultivation of Nuns OrchidsLots of gardeners have had phenomenal results in growing Nun’s Orchids. These orchids are fairly vigorous and relatively simple to cultivate and care for.SpeciesThe Nun’s Orchids species are know as Phaius Tankervilliae or PhaiusGrandifolius, but the former term is used more often. Nun’s Orchids belong to the Phaius genus to which over forty identified species belong. Most species belonging to this genus are terrestrial orchids, but a few epiphyte species — that reside on trees — belonging to this genus have been discovered as well.Flower Size5 inches long.
