It's OK
To Drink Rosé!
We just love to sell (and drink) good dry
Rosé during the
summer months, and this year we have the best
selection ever. Here are some deliciously dry
Rosé wines
currently in stock:
Tegernseerhof Zweigelt Rosé
2007; Wachau, Austria ($12.99, less 20% by
the case) - Our hands down pick for the best dry
rosé in the store is back from the stunning vintage
of 2007! It's savory and crisp with beautiful
balance. The quality and complexity belies its
bargain price. Tegernseerhof's Zweigelt Rose is a
great match for Ahi tuna, grilled salmon, spicy stir
fry or simply by itself.
Markowitsch Rosé
2007; Carnuntum, Austria ($15.99) - Although Gerhard Markowitsch is best known for his red wines, he
craved a refreshing wine to enjoy in the warm summer
months of the almost Mediterranean climate of
Carnuntum. Therefore he blended two of his red
varietals, the indigenous Blaufränkish and
international Cabernet Sauvignon, into a
delightfully fresh Rosé. Makes an ideal aperitif, as
well as a pleasant companion with fish and various
cold summer salads.
Hillinger Secco 2006; Burgundland, Austria ($18.99,
less 20% by the case) - 100% Pinot Noir crafted into
a Rosé sparkling
wine made in the Prosecco style, with delicate
aromas of fresh strawberries and red berries which
follow through on the palate. The flavors are
beautifully balanced with a vibrant and refreshingly
dry finish. Beautiful color and package. Make any
day a celebration!
Hillinger Secco Magnum 1.5 liter 2006 ($36.99-on
sale $27.75) - If
this larger format Rosé
doesn't say "Celebration", I just don't know what
does. The same great juice you have all come to know
just in an easier, more celebratory magnum format.
Impress your friends at your next gathering. Prost!
Campuget Rosé
2007; Costières de
Nîmes, France ($10.99) - Robert Parker has called
the Campuget estate "...one of the stars of the up
and coming appellation of Costieres de Nimes." Their
Rosé, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, features
refreshing flavors of strawberries and watermelon
with a peppery tang on its dry and lively finish. A
great wine to enjoy on its own or anything from
steamed crab to burgers off the grill.
Mourgues du Gres Les
Galets Rosé
2007; Costières
de Nîmes, France ($16.99) - This estate is blessed
with the same galet stones, literally 'roller' or
large round stones, found in the vineyards of
Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This helps Francois Collard
craft Syrah and Grenache with the great intensity
found in the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape but at a
price point found in Costières de Nîmes. The Rosé
has intense and focused ripe strawberry and cherry
fruit, yet is completely dry. Try elegant Rosé with
grilled shrimp or goat cheese salad.
Boizel Brut
Rosé NV;
Epernay, France ($52.99/750ml; $27.99/375ml) - Fifty
percent pinot noir, 8% of which is vinified in red,
combined with 30% of Pinot Meunier and 20%
Chardonnay. A fine, open nose, with delicate red
berry fruit flavours (redcurrant, raspberry). Fresh,
elegant and long in the mouth. Brut Rosé is the
perfect accompaniment for summertime aperitifs such
as cold meats, lamb, ... not to mention all red
fruits desserts.
Barnaut Grand Cru Brut Rosé
NV; à Bouzy,
France ($43.99) - "Like a red Burgundy with bubbles.
Loads of cherry and berry notes, marked by an earthy
accent, all backed by a firm structure. An artisanal
rosé with plenty of personality."
(Wine Spectator).
Vecchia Torre Leverano Rosato 2007,
Italy ($8.99) - Get past this hideous label and get
into on one of the best 2007 Rosés we have found
under $10. Mostly comprised of Puglia’s indegineous
grape called Negroamaro, this juicy easy going dry
rosé will have you forgetting all about the label!
Casabianca Poggio
Gonfienti Rosato
2007 ($11.99, less 20% by the case) - Simply put, Casabianca's Rosato is a spicy, beautifully balanced
rose. Its juiciness is filled with strawberry /
cherry fruit and savory spice. Elegant and pure, it
would pair well with rosemary/thyme chicken breast,
sautéed seafoods, or light salads with heirloom
tomatoes.
Ameztoi Txakolina
Rosé 2007,
Spain
($17.99) -
This beautiful rose from the Basque region in Spain
is quickly becoming a favorite. Well rounded and
intense upfront, its flavors surge forth with
vibrant strawberries and tangy cherries with
delicate lingering spice throughout. Lively and
energetic, it's sure to pair wonderfully with fresh
summer salads, steamed or sautéed
shellfish, or simply enjoy by itself on the patio in
the evening.
Isolda
Rosé 2007;
Navarra, Spain ($7.99) - A marvelously ripe Rosé
with superb bright flavors of strawberry/cherry
fruit paired with a refreshingly dry and lively
finish and is evidence that there are still great
values to be had in European wine. The ultimate
porch wine.
A Donkey and Goat "Isabel's Cuvée"
Grenache Rosé
2007; McDowell Valley, California ($22.99) -
Raleigh native and Broughton graduate Tracey Brandt
and her husband Jared bring you this great dry Rosé
crafted entirely from Grenache. Bursting with fun,
fresh flavors of raspberries and cherries. A crisp,
dry and balanced finish help this easy-going blush
pair with a variety of foods.
Elk Cove Pinot Noir Rosé
2007; Willamette Valley, Oregon ($16.99)
- Elk Cove's Pinot Noir Rose is what
summertime's all about; clean, fragrant and showing
freshness with strawberry fruit. Enjoy this crisp,
light, simply refreshing wine all by itself on a
warm sunny day or pair it with succulent shellfish
or roast chicken. Bon appétit!
Turkey Flat Rosé
2007; Barossa Valley, Australia ($22.99) - “The
Provencal-styled 2007 Rose is medium pink with
bright aromas of strawberry and raspberry. It has a
velvety texture, intense flavors, excellent
concentration and a lengthy finish. It would do very
well on a Thanksgiving table. Turkey Flat Vineyards
has been owned by the Schulz family since 1865.
..with... a consistent track record over the years
.” Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Issue 173
Graham Beck Brut Rosé
2006, South Africa ($19.99) - This South African
sparkling rosé, made from 82% Pinot Noir and 18%
Chardonnay, is ideal for parties or dinner events.
Its rich hue is accompanied by a complex bouquet red
berry fruit and a fine creamy mousse. Enjoy as an
aperitif or pair with light hors d'œuvre and
smoked or grilled salmon.
Seaboard Cellar Selections:
New Collectible Wines from Australia, Spain &
California
Now in stock (in very limited quantities) are
dozens of new wines suited for collecting or special
occasions. Here are some of the stars:
Araujo Altagracia 2005
($99.00 net) - "As for the 2005 Altagracia, which
had been bottled several months before my visit,
much like its sibling, it is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon,
the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. (The 2004 is 94%
Cabernet Sauvignon.) A slightly bigger cuvee of
nearly 1,200 cases, the wine has an almost French
personality with its elegant, pure cedary and black
currant fruit intermixed with hints of chocolate,
oak, and earth. The tannins are supple, and the wine
medium to full-bodied, very enjoyable already, yet
capable of lasting 12-15 years.
One of California’s and the world’s great wine
estates, Araujo continues to exhibit remarkable
consistency and impeccably high quality. Little
seems to change other than some minor tweaking with
respect to viticulture and winemaking. The team of
Bart and Daphne Araujo, their talented longtime
winemaker, Francoise Peschon, and the globe-trotting
oenologist, Michel Rolland, are to be commended on
the extraordinary elegance of these wines." (92
points, Wine Advocate issue #174).
DuMol Russian River
Syrah 2006 ($72.99) - "The 2006 Syrah
Russian River is full-bodied, richly fruity, not
terribly complex at the moment, but pure and nicely
balanced.
Proprietor Kerry Murphy and his winemaker, Andy
Smith, are doing sensational work in the
cool-climate areas of the Russian River. This has
become one of my favorite tastings of the year, and
not only are their Chardonnays and Pinot
world-class, but they have extended their brilliance
to both Viognier and Syrah. This is a winery that is
clearly on top of its game and pushing all the right
buttons in terms of quality." (Wine Advocate
issue #174).
Biale Napa Ranches
Zinfandel 2006 ($42.99) -
The Biale
family, immigrants from Northern Italy, began
growing grapes in Napa in the 1930’s – Zinfandel
only. Zinfandel, California’s adopted grape, was
widely planted by immigrants throughout the State’s
history as a highly flavorful red grape well-suited
for the climate. Committed to the tradition of
farming grapes, the Biales decided in 1991 to form a
partnership with the goal of producing a world-class
wine from the oldest Zinfandel vines on the ranch.
Now, seventeen years later, Biale is recognized
internationally as being among California’s very
finest producers of Zinfandel. Today, a family of
wines of distinctly different personalities is
produced, with the goal of capturing the ultimate
expressions of their sites. Each wine is
vineyard designated only in years when it is
outstanding. Good wines are made but great wines are
grown.
Kilikanoon Shiraz
"Oracle" 2004 ($95.00) - "The dense
purple-colored 2004 Shiraz Oracle ratchets up the
fruit and glycerin levels, yet remains pure,
elegant, and well-balanced. It offers beautiful
aromas of blueberries, blackberries, acacia flowers,
and spicy oak. Full-bodied, powerful, cleanly
textured, long, and heady, I would not be surprised
to see it evolve for 15-20 years." (97 points,
Wine Advocate issue #167).
Boarding Pass "1st
Class" Shiraz 2005, South Australia
($29.99) - "The 2005 Shiraz “First Class” was
barrel-fermented and aged for 18 months in new and 1
year French and American oak. More complex
aromatically, it has a lovely bouquet of toast,
smoke, cedar, lavender, blueberry, and blackberry.
Opulent, velvety, and seamless, it has great depth,
spicy blue and black fruit flavors with hints of
licorice and chocolate, and a very long finish.
Drink it over the next 10 years. The Boarding Pass
label is just that, a dead ringer for an airplane
boarding pass. According to Dan Philips, it is like
going on a trip to Australia without leaving home
while the First Class is a luxury upgrade. Aside
from the humor, these two wines have more in common
with Fed-Ex, delivering the goods right on time.
R Wines is a new company founded by importer and
marketing genius, Dan Philips, along with co-owner,
renowned winemaker, Chris Ringland. Winemakers for R
Wines are Chris Ringland, Lisa Wetherell, Andrew
Hercock, and John Hughes. It encompasses four
familiar labels, Marquis Philips, 3 Rings, Roogle,
and Bitch, along with 13 others created especially
for R Wines. Needless to say, the packaging of these
wines is amazingly creative but, more importantly,
what is in the bottle consistently over-delivers
from low-end to high-end.(94 points, Wine
Advocate issue #173).
Torbreck "Woodcutter's
Red" 2006; Barossa Valley, Australia
($21.99) - "The 2006 Woodcutter’s Shiraz was sourced
from six sub-regions of the Barossa. The wine was
aged for 12 months in large, neutral French oak and
was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Purple-colored,
it has an attractive array of pepper, spicy
blackberry, black cherry, and blueberry muffin
aromas. Full-bodied and opulent on the palate, the
wine delivers gobs of meaty, full-flavored blue and
black fruits to accompany its forward, easy-going
personality. Drink this incredible value over the
next 4-6 years." (92 points, Wine Advocate
issue #173).
Kilikanoon Shiraz "Killerman's
Run" 2005; Clare Valley, Australia
($24.99) - "The 2005 Shiraz Killerman’s Run,
which had just been bottled, is unbelievably good.
It possesses a deep ruby/purple color, terrific
blackberry and cassis fruit, hints of charcoal,
licorice, and earth, and an opulent, voluptuous
personality. Enjoy this super-sexy Shiraz over the
next 3-4 years." (92 points, Wine Advocate
issue #167).
Torbreck "The Factor"
2005, Barossa Valley, Australia ($109.00)
- "The 2005 The Factor is 100% Shiraz sourced from
dry grown vines from six sub-regions of Barossa. It
spent 24 months in 30% new French oak. Opaque
purple-colored, it delivers an expressive bouquet of
pepper, smoke, espresso roast, blackberry,
blueberry, and licorice. Full-bodied and voluptuous
on the palate, nuances of saddle leather and mineral
emerge to complement the layers of spicy blue and
black fruits. The wine is beautifully integrated
with enough well-concealed tannin to keep this wine
evolving for a decade. The pure finish lingers for
60+ seconds to complete the experience of a totally
hedonistic turn-on.
Torbreck, under the leadership of owner/winemaker
David Powell, remains a Barossa Valley benchmark as
well as one of the world’s greatest wine estates.
The top cuvees are limited production and expensive
but there are also some outstanding values in the
portfolio. With regard to the current vintages for
the Barossa red wines, David Powell states '2004 is
more savory while 2005 has more purity and
definition. 2004 is more classic, 2005 will take
longer to come around.'" (97 points, Wine Advocate
issue #173).

Support your local Independent Retailer
The climate of retail America is changing rapidly, with
large "big box" retailers, wine clubs and "virtual" storefronts putting
the squeeze on small family-owned businesses. Yes, there can be some
conveniences to shopping in a chain store, but many times the
independent retailer offers far better selection and service with
competitive prices. Plus, more of your dollars are returned to the local
community, instead of flowing to a corporate office. We also live in our
communities and support local charitable organizations.
We are proud to be a charter member of
the North Carolina Independent Wine Retailers
Association and we encourage you to support your locally
owned independent businesses including wine shops, bookstores, shoe
stores, clothing stores, etc...whenever possible. For more
