The Civil Rights Act had just been passed in 1964, the Miranda warning was just coming into play, Whites were rioting against the war in Vietnam, and Blacks were rioting for civil rights reasons. White and Black radical groups were spawned that perpetrated bank robberies and murdered police officers. The story reveals how coping with the cumbersome bureaucratic system had an effect on the FBI agent. It portrays the activities and personalities of law enforcement officers with a concentration on the procedures of police and FBI work. It also portrays them as real people who were not infallible, which sometimes led to humorous occurrences. The battle at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, is included and retired FBI Special Agent in Charge Nicholas O'Hara was gracious enough to furnish the background in the "Epilogue." 1975 The pressure on the fugitive squad could get really intense in Detroit. There was the constant fear factor of kicking down doors concealing armed murderers in the dark, with no place to get out of harm's way if anything went wrong. There was the frustration of dealing on a daily basis with family and friends of the fugitives who lied, hid the criminals, and would even fight them at times; and there were long, irregular hours. About the Authors

Bill Gillespie was born and educated in Texas and graduated from University of North Texas in Denton in 1966. After entering the F.B.I. in 1971, his career led him to assignments in Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Detroit, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Honolulu. He retired from the F.B.I. in 1991. Bill has enjoyed a great deal of traveling since retiring from the F.B.I. Allyn Baskerville was born and educated in Iowa and graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City in1961. After entering the F.B.I. in 1964, his career led him to assignments in Washington, D.C., Phoenix, Tucson, Dallas, Lubbock, Juneau, Albuquerque and Honolulu. He retired from the F.B.I. in June 1989, and was subsequently employed by The Mirage Resorts, Las Vegas, Nevada, as an Investigator in Corporate Security until June 2000. back to top

A must read for all who may consider working in intelligence - This book was enjoyable reading...easy to understand and follow.Some of the graphic descriptions were vivid enough to make me feel and sense the setting. The undercover work is accurately portrayed, including the pitfalls of dealing with FBI Headquarters while developing a monstrous fraud case. Fog, the main character's obviously humorous sobriquet sets a stage for the author to laugh at himself while thoroughly entertain the reader. I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it. Not since The F.B.I. Story, a book authored by Don Whitehead in the 1950s which spawned a succesful motion picture starring Jimmy Stewart, has an updated version of the career of an F.B.I. agent been written. The work has changed considerably since the publication of that book. Although Mr. Whitehead's version was somewhat void of humor, the authors of this book, "Honk If You Love J.
