Over the target just prior to bomb release, one of thelow squadron B-17s was hit in the Bomb bay by flak. The 1000 lb. bombsexploded and nine of the twelve aircraft in the squadron were instantlydestroyed or knocked out of formation.Sixof the nine went down over the target, one flew two hours on a singleengine and landed at Paris, another "crippled plane" landed in Belgiumand the other struggled back to its home base and landed long after theother thirty nine B-17s had returned from the mission. The one thatcame home was "Liberty Belle", she went on to complete 64 combatmissions before being salvaged on February 18, 1945. Well-matched to the theme of the 10th Annual internationalcompetition, "The View from 100", Reller's work was well received bythe judges, earning the "Daedelus Award for Excellence inCraftsmanship."TheReller Family has been in business for over 50 years inFlorida. A number of wrecks were found – cannons,anchors –but novaluable treasure. The diving was it’s own reward!Uponreturn to Florida, Bernard set up a lost wax castingoperation for hisdad’s business but quickly found a ready market for his owndesigns –mostly nautical – inspired by his recent time at sea.
